Changes in the sector induced by the Corona pandemic

The extraordinary impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) has accelerated a change in attitude and heightened the environmental consciousness both in the industry as well as in travellers. This is making way for a more sensible and mindful tourism in which the travelers are more aware of the impact they have on the environment, nature and the local communities that they visit.

Travelers and tourists are searching for more sustainable options for their journeys. 53% of global travelers want to travel in a more sustainable manner in the future, which will lead to a more eco-conscious mindset in 2021 and beyond.

69% expect that the travel industry will offer more sustainable travel options to enable them to live meaningful experiences, in most cases in relation to the surroundings and to nature.

As a consequence of the coronavirus more than half of the respondents (53%) consider reducing waste and recycling plastic during their future trips, which proves that not only do people want to protect themselves but also the destinations they visit.

The travelers believe that in the long term the industry will have to adapt itself to this sustainable mindset and offer more attractive packages that align with this new trend.

At the same time, travelers desire greater transparency from the tour operators with regard to how their money is reinvested into the local community, thus implying an evolution towards a more regenerative tourism.
