THE OCEANCITIZEN PROJECT KICKED OFF!

Last week (January 23-26), the OceanCitizen project kicked off where the most advanced marine science and a cutting-edge team of entrepreneurs met at the main pilot site in Spain to coordinate this exciting regenerative project, where the marine forest restoration actions will take place over the next 4 years.

This project is a benchmark for the demonstration of the Mission Blue Horizon Europe Program and is in the EU’s spotlight as one of the most inspiring.

The project integrates economy, ecology, education, business, communication and oceanography as a synergic vision of the challenge that we face: to implement an underwater coastal restoration protocol, in which a new generation of ocean gardeners through an economically sustainable program will enhance local economies and ecosystem species, serving as a key principle for creating a new way of «harmony between people and the Ocean.”

OCEAN CITIZEN HAS BEEN AWARDED IN THE PROGRAM “HORIZON EUROPE”

The project OCEAN CITIZEN has been awarded with 11.4 million euros in the program “Horizon Europe”, led by the European Union Research and Innovation.

As partner of the consortium OCEAN CITIZEN, Underwater Gardens International (UGI) will have the opportunity to tightly collaborate with the other 21 international partners belonging to 7 different countries of the EU and Israel. The project will be make mainly in Tenerife, where UGI has the first ongoing regenerative park.

«Restoration acts promote biodiversity, enhance carbon sequestration and accelerate coastal and offshore resilience.»

Yet, we still lack a program that combines conservation and restoration under a unified setting, as the involvement of local citizen, embracing socio-economic parameters into opportunities.

Thus, an advanced restoration program must conjoin ecological perspectives together with societal commitment and clear economic benefits for local communities.

Responding to the above, OCEAN CITIZEN proposal represent a novel restoration approach in which a profession of “gardeners of the sea” is created and endorsed, including detailed curriculum; the project targets the restoration of the most neglected marine biome, encompassing the various types of Marine Forest (MF) organisms (seagrasses, seaweeds, sponges, corals, gorgonians, etc.); transplantation of MF organisms the is performed on land, and in situ, from shallow, mesophotic to continental shelf areas (to 90-100 meters depth); a novel approach for C sequestering and sink the full involvement of citizens and local stakeholders with a complete business plan.
