INTERVIEW WITH PURI CANALS IN CADENA SER

Cadena SER invited Puri Canals, Biologist and Director of Institutional Relations of Underwater Gardens International, to talk about the underwater gardens to regenerate the biodiversity and ecosystems of the oceans that we propose in Underwater Gardens.

The UN Ocean Decade Conference 2024 was recently held in Barcelona with a declaration, sponsored by UNESCO, calling on countries to defend the seas against pollution, warming and overfishing.

“As part of the solution for the regeneration of biodiversity in marine ecosystems, Underwater Gardens International emerges, an initiative dedicated to the restoration, conservation and regeneration of marine spaces. It is the direct response to the challenges facing the world’s oceans, such as climate change and the degradation of marine habitats with our projects: Sea Garden or Ocean Citizen.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity at Cadena SER for inviting Puri Canals to share our story and purpose with your audience.

INTERVIEW WITH MARC GARCÍA-DURÁN HUET, EXECUTIVE PRESIDENT & FOUNDER DE UNDERWATER GARDENS INTERNATIONAL, IN THE PROGRAM «LA PRIMERA PEDRA» ON RAC 1

RAC 1 studios invited Marc to participate in the program «La primera pedra» to discuss the benefits of marine regeneration and its significant role in shaping a more sustainable future.

During the conversation on sustainability and underwater ecosystems, Marc talked about the challenges we face and the solutions we propose from Underwater Gardens project:

“We are currently challenged with overcoming misinformation and ignorance surrounding what regeneration is, what it entails, and why it’s a crucial part of the solution to the current climate crisis. This calls for a shift from being a destructive society to becoming regenerators and stewards of nature.”

“Our project reflects a commitment to moving away from degeneration towards genuine care for our planet. Beyond superficial representations, we believe that true sustainability stems from a sincere appreciation for nature, ultimately enriching our lives.”

Our sincere gratitude to Noemí Polls for the invitation and to the team at «La Primera Pedra» for the opportunity to share the vision of Underwater Gardens International with the audience.

INTERVIEW WITH PURI CANALS IN BETEVÉ, BARCELONA’S LOCAL TV CHANNEL

In the framework of the UN Ocean Decade Conference 2024, Puri Canals, Biologist and Director of Institutional Relations of Underwater Gardens International, was invited also as a participant in this conference to share what we do at Underwater Gardens for marine regeneration at Betevé, Barcelona’s local TV channel.

“As a society, we are extremely unaware of the quantity of goods and services that we need for a living, and that they come directly from the sea. A reason to preserve the wealth and contribute to the regeneration of ecosystems degraded comes directly from the human action or by the effects of climate change.“

“An innovative way to achieve it is through the underwater gardens designed by our team, which have been presented within the week of the UN Oceans Decade that has been celebrated at the International Convention Center of Barcelona.”

We are extremely grateful for this amazing opportunity to share our project with the audience of Betevé.

OCEAN CITIZEN HAS BEEN AWARDED IN THE PROGRAM “HORIZON EUROPE”

The project OCEAN CITIZEN has been awarded with 11.4 million euros in the program “Horizon Europe”, led by the European Union Research and Innovation.

As partner of the consortium OCEAN CITIZEN, Underwater Gardens International (UGI) will have the opportunity to tightly collaborate with the other 21 international partners belonging to 7 different countries of the EU and Israel.

«Restoration acts promote biodiversity, enhance carbon sequestration and accelerate coastal and offshore resilience.»

Yet, we still lack a program that combines conservation and restoration under a unified setting, as the involvement of local citizen, embracing socio-economic parameters into opportunities.

Thus, an advanced restoration program must conjoin ecological perspectives together with societal commitment and clear economic benefits for local communities.

Responding to the above, OCEAN CITIZEN proposal represent a novel restoration approach in which a profession of “gardeners of the sea” is created and endorsed, including detailed curriculum; the project targets the restoration of the most neglected marine biome, encompassing the various types of Marine Forest (MF) organisms (seagrasses, seaweeds, sponges, corals, gorgonians, etc.); transplantation of MF organisms the is performed on land, and in situ, from shallow, mesophotic to continental shelf areas (to 90-100 meters depth); a novel approach for C sequestering and sink the full involvement of citizens and local stakeholders with a complete business plan.
